Restoring the Living Ground Beneath the Trees
Beneath the established tree canopy, exposed urban soil has become compacted and depleted.
The Urban Grass Garden reintroduces resilient Victorian native grasses to stabilise soil, protect tree roots and create a calm, living ground layer suited to Melbourne’s climate.
Why Native Grasses
Stabilise and bind soil
• Improve water infiltration
• Protect tree root zones
• Suppress weeds naturally
• Support urban biodiversity
Quiet, essential foundation plants.
The Outcome
Supporting the City of Melbourne’s Urban Forest and Nature strategies, the Urban Grass Garden restores soil health, enhances biodiversity and contributes to urban cooling. By restoring living groundcover beneath the trees, it supports long-term landscape health.
